Kilternan – the only village in Have you ever been up to see? Or do you fancy a ski trip with a difference on the 8th March – read on! Growing up in Kilternan years ago, the fledgling ski club in Kilternan seemed faintly exotic And evening drinks in the bar at the then Dublin Sport Hotel seemed exciting with all these Exuberant people in uniform coming in off the ski slope in Kilternan. Little did I know then that skiing was to become such a big part of my life – both as a wonderful addictive holiday and also through my work – with Topflight. Now when I go to the ski slopes, I go with so much knowledge and pride. And watch this space for links with Kilternan and But still, when I go up there now, to help out in any way to help for the special ski Olympics participants are up there training or when blind or visually impaired skiers are being taught by the voluntary ski instructors – yes – they are volunteers – it can take my breadth and my heart away. To go up there and see what has been achieved over the years on a couple of slopes is amazing and we should all be proud of what is happening up there, despite the building site all around. This year is the 15th year of the Topflight National Council for the Blind Ski Challenge. It takes place in St.Johann in This year, we take to the slopes with hopefully a big group of around 75 skiers which will include up to 20 visually impaired skiers. The way it works is: We pay for our ski holiday – then we all try to fundraise at least €1000 to pay for the one-to-one ski instructor for the blind and visually impaired skiers for the week. This week, we have Larry Gogan and Nikki Hayes from 2FM joining us again to broadcast live, tv has been promised and a journalist or two to record the wonderful achievements of the week. If you’d like to come and see what has been achieved in Kilternan over the years, manifest itself in a snowy Tirolean village, call NCBI on 01 8307033 –I can promise you a trip of a lifetime. Or just come up to the ski club some day – and see what is going on – on our doorstep – it’s a wonderful sport – even to watch. If you would like to donate anything towards a blind person’s ski tuition – call me on 087 2505007. Aileen Eglington |
